He studied violin-making with Shiro Suzuki (Dr.Suzuki's brother)
in Matsumoto, Japan, from 1972 to 1973. He then travelled with his wife and two sons to
Italy and studied under Maestros Bissolatti and Morassi at the Scuole Internazionale di
Liuteria in Cremona from 1973 to 1975.
Severin established his own shop in Miami in 1980, and it has since grown to house the
largest selection of stringed instruments in Florida.
Generally Severin makes Guarneri models, using the lines from either the Paganini
Guarneri or the Kochanski Guarneri. His varnish is primarily of a reddish or orange color,
made with natural dyes, over a golden background.
Severin Schurger's violins are known for their quick response, pleasing quality and big
tone, as well as their playability.
In 2004 Severin moved his shop to Alachua, in Norh Florida near
Gainesville.
